Quick and easy home decor updates to try right now

Inject some colour with fresh paint

Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan is the paint you want to use for a quick, creative project. It adheres to most anything with minimal prep—no sanding or priming required. Add some colour to baskets, plant pots, stairwells, furniture, or picture frames you already have around.

Upgrade your interior door handles

A quick and easy visual update to freshen up your space is new hardware for your doors. You’ve probably never spent as much time with your door handles now that we’re wiping them down more than ever before (multiple times a week? A day?). Add some bling with a beautiful custom glass knob like this one from Schlage Canada, or update your door knobs to match or complement one another. There’s an endless variety of sizes and styles of interior door handles. Updating your door hardware is an easy DIY you can accomplish in just a few minutes and feel good about every time you open--and close-- a door. Learn how to update your interior door handles here.

Make a statement with a gallery wall

Above the sofa, on an accent wall, along a staircase, you can add some personality to your space with a gallery wall. It doesn’t need to be huge, a collection of a few frames or a floor to ceiling display are both magical. Print off some favourite photos (places, people, or pets) and gather a few of your favourite things -- artwork, photos, wall hangings and build your own unique art installation. Here are some tips to creating your own gallery wall,

Layer on colour and texture with pillows

Decorative pillows are comfy and stylish and can switch up your entire look without redecorating anything else. Switching up the covers on throw pillows with the change of seasons is an easy decor update. Go with light colourful covers for spring and summer and heavier fabrics in darker shades in the cooler months. I even have fun covers for Christmas too. Try a variety of sizes you can swap in and out for a change every once and awhile. Keep your eyes out for affordable covers at Ikea, Winners/Homesense, and Giant Tiger. Tip: Invest in feather/down pillow inserts, they are so worth it. They hold their shape so you can ‘karate chop’ style them and they fluff up nicely. Then save on affordable covers you swap in and out.

Add life to your space with plants

You will absolutely love the difference having living, breathing plants in your space makes. You may think you are not a plant person or you can’t keep one alive, I once used to kill my houseplants too, but honestly, just stick to a regular watering schedule (not too little, not too much) and you’ll be ok. There are even varieties that are really hard to kill. You can pick up a potted plant at grocery or hardware stores. IKEA has a great selection at great price points. Don’t want to commit? Treat yourself to a bouquet next time you get your groceries. It just feels good to have a splash of colour in  your space. You don’t have to leave them in the kitchen either, which seems to be the obvious place for flowers. How nice would it be iif a plant or vase of flowers is the first thing you see when you wake up in the morning? Or add some zen to the bathroom. Learn how to make a statement with oversized plants.
