How you can decorate your home like a pro

  1. Wallpaper an accent wall. This will help keep the price down since wallpapering an entire room can get pricey. Be sure to choose a focal wall. Pull a colour from the wallpaper and use it to paint the other walls so the transition is not jarring. Wallpaper should always be hung with paste, not water, which can get tricky and messy.

  2. Hang your art at eye-level. With a standard-size ceiling height, this means the middle of your piece should be about 5 feet from the floor. Add a bit more height if the ceilings are higher but don’t go much higher than this eye-level rule of thumb. Hang artwork 8-10 inches above furniture.

  3. Mix and match high and low-end decor. Spend money on more durable pieces (think sofa, bed, tables) and mix in lower-cost items like pillows, blankets, vases, and frames. Mix solids, patterns, and colours up too. The same goes for tones and textures. Don’t be afraid of mixing metals or wood finishes.

  4. Measure twice, hang once when it comes to placing lighting. There should be 5.5 feet from the floor to the bottom of your light fixture when it’s hanging over a regular height dining table. There should be six feet from the floor to the bottom of your light fixture when hanging once over a kitchen island. You don’t want lights hanging in your face or impairing your line of sight when you’re at the counter.

  5. Put a rug under it. Rugs are a great way to bring colour and character into your home. Plus they up the cozy factor. When choosing a rug for your space, make sure it’s big enough for the front legs of all the furniture to rest on the rug. Plus leave 4-6 inches of rug on either side of the furniture. In bedrooms, rugs should extend at least 18 inches around the bed.
