I think for me what makes a house a home are a few key things:

Personalized touches
Personalized touches for every individual in the family. Whether it’s in their rooms, or in the main living space it’s all about making the house work for you and the stage of life you are living in. Each of the kids bedrooms have elements that are unique to them. Mariko has gymnastics rings to hang off of. The boys have a big lego table in their room. These elements allow them to really love their personal spaces and want to spend time in there.
Functionally designed spaces
As for the main living areas, making sure that they function for what we need, like having enough comfy seating for our family of five to all curl up on the couch together to enjoy a movie… and having lots of cozy blankets on hand so everyone is comfortable. So I guess you could say it ranges from big elements you choose like the couch you decide on, to the small elements like having blanket storage. Like a ladder, trunk or basket. But both have the functionality of the home for our family in mind.
Effective storage solutions
Lastly having plenty of customized storage for our needs. So I guess you could say this is also about making the house function for our needs. For example, we have two big drawers in the kitchen dedicated to our kids. One is solely for crafts. And one is solely for kids cups, plates, bowls etc., Both of these drawers are heavily used daily by all members of the family. Or another example is we don’t have a mud room (we live in a bungalow with a tiny front closet) so I created one in our laundry room. We needed more jacket, backpack, shoe storage. Elements such as this are constantly changing as the family grows and evolves but make our house feel like ours.
