Create a Boho Home Decor Vibe

Advice for achieving a natural, beachy boho vibe

How to create a beachy boho look

If a cozy, layered, eclectic, and inviting interior is what you are looking for to feel relaxed and at ease at home, the boho look may inspire you.

Indie Home is a concept store founded from a love of nature, natural materials, and neutral pallets. Indie Home hosts a curated collection for indie boho living composed of handmade and hand-picked items.

Artist and owner of Indie Home Kimiko Willgress shares how to achieve a beachy boho look.

Use a variety of textures

Willgress says the number one thing to keep in mind when it comes to boho decor is having a variety of textures. Layering pom pom blankets, chunky knit throws and pillows on the furniture, adding rugs, and using dried florals add interest to the space.

Bring the outdoors in

Incorporate natural elements. Use pampas grass, dried faux grasses, large, dried palm leaves, prana rocks (handmade slate oil lamps) or a Mosu bowl potted with moss and outdoor succulents to incorporate the outdoors indoors. Willgress says plants are a super important part of boho decor too. Add lush, oversized statement plants like big leafy ferns, ficus plants, and fiddle leaf fig trees.

Stick to a neutral palette

Boho interiors can be eclectic and vibrant, using bright colours like emerald. Willgress says that’s not her take, but she suggests finding a colour palette that works for you and stick with it. For a beachy boho vibe, stick with a neutral palette. Add colour with rust or olive hues and stay neutral with the rest of your decor.

Include vintage vibes

Incorporate vintage elements into the decor. Mixing old with new is important, says Willgress, and adds character to the space. Include antique and vintage pieces or second-hand or repurposed furniture to pair Old World with New World and make an impact.

Pile on the rugs

Willgress says rug selection is crucial to making a space work. She suggests considering both the size of the rug and the rug itself and says the bigger the better. Rugs will add more texture to the room. Try layering rugs, Willgress also says. Layer a patterned rug over a natural fibre or jute rug or layer rugs within the same colour palette.

Tips for buying the right size rug:

  • A rug doesn’t need to fill the whole room, but should anchor your seating arrangement

  • Avoid using a rug that is too small. A 5x8 size rug is best for smaller spaces.

  • Place the front two legs of each furniture piece on the rug. An 8x10 size works well for this.

  • To have all legs of the furniture rest on the rug, try a 9x12 size.

  • Try to keep at least 18 inches of bare floor exposed by the rugs’ edge.

  • Try to leave at least 12 inches of border between your rug and the walls.
