Blomidon Trails and Blomidon Tides

After camping at Blomidon Provincial Park for the first time this summer, we absolutely knew we had to come back for a day trip and more hiking.

In the off-season, with the campground closed, you’ll arrive at the day-use lower parking lot at the bottom of Cape Blomidon. The beach here is where you’ll find access to the world’s highest tides. We didn’t time our arrival, and the tide was all the way in, so we couldn’t head down to the beach - yet. There are vault toilets here if you need them before you start your trek. Dogs are permitted on leash.

Blomidon Trail Directions

The Jodrey, Woodland, and Borden Brook Trail Loop make up over 12 kilometres of terrain. I estimate it could take four hours to hike the entire park with family in tow. At the end of Jodrey Trail, there's a Look-off Trail, but you’ll need a few hours to get there and back. You can catch similar views, just as stunning, along the way if you need to turn back sooner.

The good news is, you can choose which trails you’d like to explore, and how much of each. For a fun family challenge, I recommend the route we took, this time with friends joining us. Start at the beginning of the Jodrey trail, which you’ll find just off the lower parking lot. You’ll be hiking alongside the shoreline with a spectacular view of the Bay of Fundy right from the get-go.

Blomidon Look-off

You’ll start travelling on a fairly wide, grassy path with a gradual incline. Just a few minutes in, there’s a bench and a beautiful view of the Bay of Fundy that’s worth the trip even if this is as far as you make it. Then you’ll enter into the woods and start climbing up. This part of the trail is much more strenuous than I realized it would be. It’s quite the climb, and very rugged, over tree roots and rocks and you’re heading straight up. There are a couple of sets of old wooden stairs to help you out. The trail is not entirely apparent, but the red markings painted on trees confirm you are going in the right direction. Make sure you have sturdy footwear to help your grip.

As rough and steep as this part of the trail is, the four-, five-, and seven-year-olds had no problem tackling the route well ahead of us. The adults were the ones huffing and puffing.
