What is sangria?

Sangria is a fruity wine-based beverage from Spain. It can be made with a red-wine base (find my red wine sangria recipe here) or white wine. The fun thing about making sangria is there are several variations. You can wing it and tweak it to your personal preference. Or, like me, throw your sangria together using whatever you’ve got in the kitchen.

As long as you you have your wine, fruit, something to use as a sweetener (simple syrup, sugar, juice), a mixer like sparkling water, and a splash of liquor to boost the alcohol content (obviously!) then you’re ready to whip up some white wine sangria!

The best white wine for sangria

Any white wine will work for making sangria, so you can use your favourite. A dryer and more acidic white wine is your best bet. Sangria is sweet so a sweet wine is a natural fit. Chose an inexpensive bottle since you’ll be adding so many more flavours in - but chose one that you’d still enjoy on it’s own. I used a homemade bottle of Pinot Grigio for my sangria.

  • Resiling

  • Pinto Grigio

  • Sauvignon Blanc

  • A sparkly Moscato or Prosecco

The best fruit for white wine sangria

I made my sangria with a tropical vibe - lots of lemon, lime, and orange flavours. I only wish I’d had some pineapple on hand! You can make a berry sangria with blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries or a picnic sangria with apples, oranges, peaches, and pears . Really, any summer fruit will do. If I’d thought of it, I would have sliced and frozen the fruit ahead of time. Next time!

  • Apples

  • Oranges

  • Peaches

  • Pears

  • Lemons

  • Limes

  • Pineapple

  • Strawberries

  • Blueberries

  • Blackberries

  • Raspberries

What else can I add to my sangria

You want to sweeten your sangria so you can use sugar, a simple syrup, orange juice, lemon juice, lemonade, or lemon-lime soda. I used both lemon juice and a tropical juice blend we happened to have in the fridge.

You can boost your white wine sangria with vodka, white rum, brandy, or triple sec. I chose to add Limoncello to complement the lemon sparking water I also used to mix-in.

My Sangria recipe

Sangria will keep well in the fridge for a few days. Prepare this summer cocktail and enjoy sipping it all weekend, or whip up a batch and find someone to share it with you. This recipe makes approximately 6 servings.

Ingredients

½ cup sugar

Zest of 1 orange

Zest of 1 lemon

½ cup lemon juice

½ cup of tropical juice blend - I used this one

1 bottle of white wine - I used a homemade Pino Grigio

½ cup Limoncello

1 cup of lemon sparkling water - I eyeballed 1.5 cups of this one but over did it. I will add less next time, it just tasted like there was too much soda water.

1 Apple cut into slices

1 Orange cut into slices

1 Peach cut into slices

1 Lime cut into slices

Directions

In a saucepan, combine the sugar, zest and juices. Bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and whisk until the sugar has dissolved.

Combine this simple syrup, all the fruit, and wine into a large pitcher or punch bowl. Chill minimum 2 hours or overnight. Add the sparkling water just before serving. It was a hot afternoon so I threw in some ice cubes on my to the patio table, but using frozen fruit would have been a better idea to prevent watering down the sangria.

Be sure to scoop lots of fruit into your glass for a sangria-soaked refreshing treat while you enjoy your delicious, easy-to-make white wine sangria!
