A Quick Book Club Recap

An update on the Read Between the Wines book club

A report on book club

I can proudly report that the Read Between the Wines Book Club is still going strong! We will be four years old later this year. The same group of friends are still gathering with the shared experience of reading the same book, and sharing their opinions about it.

The purpose of book club

We’ve continued to meet every six weeks or so, to talk about the books we’ve been selecting, catch up on life, laugh, de-stress, engage in meaningful conversations, and sometimes more than others, let loose!

We’ve grown, too. New faces have been added to the crew, and welcomed with open arms. It’s nice to have a solid number of members so when some unfortunately can’t make it, we still have a group to get together. Life happens. Work happens. Sickness happens. Kids happen. It’s pretty impressive we find the time to have the majority of us meet, and continue to do so. This tells me our book club is special. It’s something we make time for, and value as part of our lives.

There’s no judgement if someone hasn’t finished a book or even cracked the spine. Sometimes a woman just needs to feed her soul with some quality girl time, stimulating conversation, good food, and WINE!

What happens at book club

As the wine does, the discussions still flow naturally. Sometimes many discussions are going at once, which is actually difficult, because everyone wants to be part of it all. Sometimes we still stay up way too late. That’s why we strive to get to business first. Talk about the book, choose a new one, and throw out the next date. As the evening rolls on, so do the conversations. The drinks are drained, and crumbs are left on the table after the last friend leaves. Our respective partners heave a sigh of relief that it’s over. For some reason we also tend to get louder as the night goes on. Sign of a good time?!

The date our book club meets is often voted on. Majority rules - the date the most people can make is the date that gets selected. Otherwise we’d never find a time where we are all available, though we’ve gotten pretty close!

Our annual trip to have book club at the Lunenburg Seaport Museum and Makerspace continues. A group of us went to see Trevor Noah live when he came to Halifax, since we’d read and discussed Born a Crime. We are due for another getaway, like the time we did a tour of Nova Scotia wineries.

We’ve read fiction, biography, and non-fiction. From best-sellers to an accidental dud of a selection (oops! It takes all kinds, but we can confirm there’s something for everyone out there), books being made into television series, books being made into movies, and some epic themed meetings, Read Between the Wines book club lives on and prospers.

In fact, we’ve read 11 more books since my first post. This brings our total book selections to 28 books! View the Read Between the Wines master booklist.

If you are looking for a recommended read, anticipating feedback, or tips for hosting your own book club, I have great news for you. Book club and the selections we read are going to be regularly featured topics on The Heather Chronicles, so you can follow along too. More than just simple reviews, I’ll be exploring related topics, themes and relationships. But members, don’t worry. The rest of what happens at book club, stays at book club!

Here are the 11 new titles we’ve read since my last post.
